Intimate Partner Femicide Investigation at the Institues of Legal Medicine of Freiburg and Padova

Executive Summary

The article argues that when a woman resides with a partner where a history of violence exists, a financial hardship poses a further risk to women. Violence against women should be viewed as a public health issue, where femicide is the most extreme version. Intimate partner violence plays a major role as most perpetrators are the victims intimate partner. Data for this study were gathered from autopsy and police reports and entered into a digital database. The collected variables covered information about the victim (demographics, health and mental health history, substance use, pregnancy, and prior stalking), the perpetrator (demographics, mental health and substance use, criminal history, and prior intimate partner violence), the relationship between them (relationship type and shared children), and detailed characteristics of the homicide itself, including timing, location, methods used, injuries, toxicology findings, and cause of death.
