Canada’s Femicide Crisis

Executive Summary

Linda Basque from Info-Femmes details the concerning rate of femicide in Canada; one Canadian woman is killed every 48 hours. The Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability report reveals that femicide has been increasing in Canada over the past five years. Between 2018 and 2022, approximately 850 women and girls were violently killed, often by a male perpetrator, the report shows. Andrea Gunraj explains that in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada has seen an increase in the rate of all forms of gender-based violence. The observatory is urging immediate action, declaring a femicide crisis and calling for femicide to be recognized in the Criminal Code of Canada. They emphasize that the government must take further steps to create legislation aimed at protecting women and girls.
