LEAF Calls for Stronger National Action on Gender-Based Violence

Executive Summary

The Women's Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) is advocating for Canada to establish a Gender-Based Commissioner to address what they call the "neglected epidemic" of gender-based violence (GBV). Moreover, Canada has arguably allowed the ongoing violation of women's rights to be socially tolerated, and the lack of an adequate legal framework further exacerbates the social issue. The report emphasizes alarming and increasing statistics regarding violence against women in Canada, categorizing it as a public health crisis. LEAF's report proposes the GBV Commissioner role, designed to have the independence and authority necessary for driving systemic change within government and the community. This proposal represents a positive step toward enhancing accountability and oversight in Canada.
