Addressing Violence and Harmful Practices in Nigeria

Executive Summary

The United Nations Sexual and Reproductive Health Agency (UNFPA)'s data report reveals alarming statistics concerning sexual and gender-based violence (GBV) in Nigeria. The report indicates that practices such as physical harm, child marriage, genital mutilation, and teenage pregnancy are frequently occurring, drastically impacting women's and girls' quality of life. Precisely, in Nigeria, 31 % of women have experienced some degree of violence, most often perpetrated by an intimate partner. In turn, UNFPA is calling for action by developing and strengthening GBV laws, increasing awareness, educational programs, and stricter enforcement to promote gender equality in Nigeria.
