Nigeria: Violence Persists 20 Years after Maputo Protocol

Executive Summary

Despite Nigeria becoming a signatory to the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa, referred to as the Maputo Protocol, Nigerian women are still facing the risk of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) today. SGBV is still pervasive in Nigeria; the lack of enforcement, poor prosecution, inadequate justice systems, and lack of support for victims further exacerbate the issues.

Mariam Ileyemi
“Nigeria signed and ratified the Maputo Protocol in 2003 and 2004 respectively. Still, issues such as child marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM), domestic violence, rape and other forms of abuse persist in the country.”
