Rethinking Policy and Prevention for Aging Victims of Intimate Partner Violence

Executive Summary

The study examines femicide in later life, emphasizing how policy conditions influence elder homicide patterns. Using 2012 U.S FBI data, it found that individuals aged 60 and over account for 7.3% of annual homicides. While men are more often victims overall, older women are disproportionately killed by intimate partners, often in homicide-suicide cases. Many perpetrators show suicidal tendencies, even without prior violence. The article highlights international differences related to firearm laws and victim protections, arguing that traditional domestic violence services may not suit older victims. It calls for prevention policies addressing male suicidality and firearm access.
