World-wide Femicide Watches, Observatories, Initiatives

Executive Summary

In 2015, then UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls, its causes and consequences (UN SRVAWG), Dubravka Simonovic, called for national “femicide watches” and/or observatories on gender-related killings of women (A/71/398).

The Femicide Watch initiative aims to focus on femicide prevention through the collection of comparable, harmonized data on femicides at national, regional and global levels. Data on femicide cases is expected to be collected and analyzed by national multidisciplinary bodies such as independent human rights institutions, civil society organizations, women’s groups and/or academic institution. Aim is to identify shortcomings with regard to national legislations, policies, jurisdictions, including their lack of implementation, and to develop preventive measures and services.

Since 2015, all kinds of initiatives have been established to gather information and provide analysis on femicide, either on the country- or regional level. This dossier offers an overview of all current initiatives, by region.
