Analysis of Media Reporting on VAW and Femicide in Germany 2020-2022

Executive Summary

The author's second analysis of German-language media reporting on violence against women and femicide covers the years 2020 to 2022. Compared to the first survey covering the years 2015 to 2019, only limited progress can be observed.

The everyday nature and complexity of VAW are often times not addressed in structural terms. Based on this critical review, the trend report offers recommendations for more differentiated reporting that recognizes VAW as a societal problem and is sensitive to the perspectives of those affected.

Furthermore, she discusses her findings in the "Buonjourno" podcast series with journalist Olivia Samnick. (Report and podcast in German.)

"Bonjourno" Podcast with Christine Meltzer (in German)

In her podcast series "Bonjourno",  journalist Olivia Samnick discusses media reporting on femicide with Christine E. Meltzer, junior professor of communication studies at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media, who has published two major reports on femicide reporting. What has changed since the last Femicide Report (2021–2024)? How has the way we talk about gender-related killings of women improved?
